TO BE A GYPSY

SUNITA ŞEAŢA

MAPS OF ROMANIA

This is the map of Romania. Romania is in eastern Europe on the Black Sea. To Be a Gypsy takes place mostly in Bistriţa and towns south of it. To find Bistriţa locate the Carpathian Mountians (the backwards "C-shaped" mountains in the center). Inside the "C" look for a city called Tigru Mureş. Go straight north (up) until you come to Bistriţa. Cluj, the city where Sunita and her father landed, is off to the west (left)--a city as large as Tigru Mureş. The picture of the two gypsy children Sunita supposedly fed in Reghin was actually taken in Tigru Mureş.

This is a closeup of the area where most of To Be a Gypsy takes place. Sunita and her father stayed in Teaca at the Mark and Barth Motel, just south of the center of the map. It's on highway 15A nearly halfway between Reghin to the south and Bistriţa to the north. The Gypsy villages Sunita visited are all near Teaca and highlighted in yellow. One Sunday Sunita traveled with the Reverend John Fracker to his three mission churches in Pinticu, Viile Tecii, and Tonciu. The real Sandu Stoica lives in Viili Tecii. To get a perspective on distance, it's three-and-a-half miles from Teaca to Viile Tecii.
